  • Why is Pristiq medication prescribed?

Pristiq (Desvenlafaxine) is used in treating depression. It is in a class of medications called serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. The medicine increases the amount of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain that helps maintain mental balance.

  • How should Pristiq medicine be used?

The medicine is available in an extended-release tablet form and it needs to be taken orally once a day with or without food. Ideally this medicine (Desvenlafaxine) should be taken around the same time every day and as directed by the doctor. Do not split, chew or crush the tablet, swallow it completely.

  • What should I do if I forget a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, however, avoid it if your next dose is near. Continue with the next scheduled dose and skip the missed dose, but never take a double dose to make up.

  • What side effects can Pristiq cause?

Some side effects include loss of appetite, extreme tiredness, sweating, and difficulty in urinating or uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body. Severe side effects may include coma, seizures, hallucinations, nosebleeds, difficulty in concentrating, memory loss, weakness and problems with coordination.

  • Precautions:
  • As precautions tell your doctor if you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitor, such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), linezolid (Zyvox), phenelzine (Nardil), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar), and tranylcypromine (Parnate).
  • If you have any allergies, or are taking any prescription or nonprescription medications or vitamins, inform your doctor beforehand. Any history of heart, liver or kidney disease, or any planned surgery should also be shared.
  • If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant or are breastfeeding let the doctor know.
